Care of your Concrete Statue
Nothing last forever but your concrete piece can last a lifetime.
The purchase of your chosen concrete piece is an investment - either emotionally and monetarily. In order to preserve the integrity of your purchase, follow some simple suggestions so your Rockmillion statue can become an heirloom.
Your concrete statuary will remain strong when it sits on a base that allows for your piece to dry such as a limestone/stone base or concrete/asphalt. Constant wet and low areas will weaken the concrete and potentially lead to cracking/breaking. Use caution.
Painted and stained pieces can handle the outdoors well. At Rockmillion, we use paint and sealers made specifically for the exterior environments. Although overtime, all pigments fade some. Applying concrete sealer a couple times a year allows your your statue to remain remain bright and protected. Sealing the statue will also prevent water from being absorbed, and assist in prevention from peeling. Another idea is applying a thin layer of wax on your statue to shed water.
Any piece of statuary that holds water such as a bird bath, planter or fountain, needs to be winterized. In order to remain outside in the elements draining all the water and moisture is necessary. Or, elect your statue to be stored indoors during the freeze and thaw.
Keep salt away from your concrete pieces.
Do not cover your concrete with plastic because the trapped heat and sunshine will make your statue sweat during the freeze and thaw. If you want to wrap your concrete piece in the winter, a good option is burlap wrap that can absorb the wetness.
We know if you take good care of your piece it will last for many years to come. Overtime, your concrete will naturally age from the weather its exposed to but being proactive with maintenance will keep it looking lovely and long lasting.
